I Can Be x GRIN
I Can Be is a children’s charity that aims to widen aspirations and break down barriers to opportunity. GRIN has been getting involved, introducing a group of children to the world of design.
At GRIN, we’ve recently been working with the wonderful organisation that is I Can Be. Their programme enables girls aged 7-8 the opportunity to explore careers they otherwise may not be exposed to, building their curiosity and confidence along the way. This gives them the ability to research and interview a wide range of women in their workplaces. GRIN has taken part in introducing children to graphic design in this way a few times now and it was fantastic to chat to a new group last week, hear their questions and witness some of their creativity.
I met a group of Year One girls from a school in Lambeth via Teams call. The girls had lots of questions for me varying from ‘What kind of things do you design?’ and ‘What do you want to do when you’re older?’ to ‘Do you have any pets?’! It was great to see how interested they were and they were all still keen to ask questions at the end of our session too.
To help the girls get into the mindset of mini designers, they each created postcards that would ‘make somebody happy’. Each of them drew or wrote down things that they felt would make people smile and they were all eager to show what they’d done afterwards. There was an array of fabulous ideas and drawings including private jets, fish, chocolates, beaches, family members and Disneyland!
It has been such a pleasure to get involved with what I Can Be is doing and we’re really looking forward to working with them more in the future.
