Meet The Team

Meet our brand new designer – Sam!

Sam has just joined Grin as a Mid-weight Designer. We’ve been finding out more about him and what he loves about design!

1) What’s your name and what is your role here at Grin?

Hi, I’m Sam and I’m delighted to have joined the design team here at Grin! I enjoy sinking my teeth into a wide variety of design projects, from branding and websites to print and packaging.

2) What are you most looking forward to about being part of team Grin?

Collaborating with a group of like-minded creatives! Working alongside other experienced designers is the best source of inspiration and helps shape my future work. I’m also eager to see what exciting new challenges and opportunities are thrown my way!

3) How did you end up working in the creative industry?

I’ve always jumped from one creative experiment to the next from a very young age, though I hadn’t considered graphic design as a career choice until college. My time at Birmingham City University and the Birmingham design community solidified my love for the subject long before I landed my first agency job. I am lucky to have had a plethora of very talented colleagues and friends to learn from and who helped elevate my career to where it is today.

4) What do you like most about being a designer?

It goes without saying that turning your passion into your profession is extremely rewarding. I like the variety of the work; there is always a lot to learn, and it keeps me on my toes.

5) What has been your favourite project you’ve worked on to date?

Just as a mother of two would say; I don’t have a favourite. Having said that, my most loved projects are those which I have grown from a simple idea and developed into a flourishing brand with a unique website and a variety of creative content.

6) Tell us about something that inspires you?

My friends! One of the best things about going to uni and working in agencies is that I’m now surrounded by loads of other creatives. I’m also particularly inspired by designers from different cultures and LGBTQ+ artists who are giving a voice to their communities and sharing their values with the world.

7) Is there an artist or designer you admire? And why?

The painter Mars Black springs to mind. Even though his paintings aren’t the most detailed or technical; I’m fascinated by the surreal and bizarre concepts behind them. Each one is a whimsical love letter to internet meme culture, often with the subject contrasted by a beautiful natural landscape. I think I just admire the sheer audacity of it all.

8) What are you interested in outside of work/design?

Out of work I can usually be found working on new “projects”. This can be anything from sewing to crafting decorations for an upcoming party.

I’m also a rock climber! Birmingham has a good selection of climbing centres and occasionally I’ll go on climbing trips out with my friends.

9) What is your favourite thing about Birmingham?

The diversity! I’m originally from the Shropshire countryside so it was refreshing coming to Birmingham for uni and meeting people from all walks of life. There’s always something exciting going on here so there’s seldom a dull day.

10) Plan B? If you weren’t working in the creative industry, what would you be doing and why?

I’m a big nature lover so I’d probably like to work in the great outdoors either as a conservationist or even a tree surgeon. (Very different but it seems fun!)
