Summer in the Square

The sun is out and so are our desk fans! To celebrate summer being in full swing, here’s an insight into one of the most ‘summery’ projects we’ve worked on this year: Colmore BID’s Summer in the Square.

Colmore BID have transformed Victoria Square in Central Birmingham into the perfect spot for getting together with friends this summer. Summer in the Square allows visitors to enjoy some of Colmore Business District’s bars and restaurants whilst soaking up some sun.

Summer in the Square compliments the closure of segments of Waterloo Street and Colmore Row, a scheme managed by Birmingham City Council to support nearby leisure and hospitality businesses.
Colmore BID supplied GRIN with a tropical inspired logo packed with bright colours, plants and nods to Birmingham alongside an artist’s representation (by one of Birmingham’s finest illustrators, Stacey Barnfield) to give us an idea of what what we had to work with. We were tasked with using this as a starting point to fill Victoria Square with the Summer in the Square look and feel.
Working with Colmore, Team GRIN decked out Victoria Square with the Summer in the Square brand. This included selfie walls, table decor and, of course, those undeniably eye-catching beach huts which have since been home to some of Colmore Business District’s best vendors over the course of the summer.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been devastating for the hospitality industry and independent food and drink vendors have taken a real hit. Thanks to Colmore BID, Summer in the Square puts a spotlight on some of these independents by bringing them to this wonderful space. Check out Asha’s, Roastie Toastie, Java Roastery, Pushkar and Waylands Yard – to name just a few of the vendors taking part.

Summer in the Square will be open again for the August Bank Holiday weekend on 26-30 August between 11am and 8pm. Make sure you go and visit! Not only will there be plenty of food and drink to enjoy, there are some great photo opportunities to be had too so get yourself over to the selfie wall and tag @colmorebusinessdistrict in your pics and get some summery goodness onto your Instagram feed.

We’ve loved seeing this little slice of Birmingham busy again and we’re excited to see what’s next from Colmore BID. They’ve recently announced that they will be taking over Cathedral Square at Christmas time for ‘Christmas in the Square’, giving us something else to look forward to once the sun disappears.
