It’s time for the Women’s World Cup

…are you ready?

I am SO excited for the FIFA Women’s World Cup! Having played football since I was 7 it has always been a passion of mine. I’ve grown up watching male football with male players as role models. So it’s an understatement when I say, I am a little jealous of the girls growing up with football now. They have some wicked role models taking the forms of Alex Scott ENG, Karen Carney ENG, Ada Hegerberg NOR (winner of the the inaugural Women’s Ballon d’Or award) Lucy Bronze, Fran Kirby ENG (both nominees for the Women’s Ballon d’Or award), Alex Morgan USA, Dzsenifer Marozsan GER and Marta BRA. Talent pouring out from every corner of the globe. Women’s football has arrived…

Everyone knows Nike are pretty badass when it comes to big sporting events and the work they produce in the run up to it. But personally I think ‘Dream Further’ trumps them all. It encompasses all the values of the WWC in to a 3 minute video, especially zoning in on celebrating the game at all levels. It includes 16 big name athletes all somehow interacting with 10 year-old Makena Cook* who is seen to play, coach, celebrate and even feature on a football computer game.

*Maken Cook debuts the limited-edition “Dream Further” jersey, the first ever kids-only football shirt designed specifically for girls.

In true fan spirit I wanted to create something to celebrate or to work alongside the WWC, either as something functional or just pure fan art.

I chose the latter, I’m a graphic designer, meaning I wanted to create something that was practical but also looked mint. I struggle with how garish some football wall charts can be – so I thought I would fix that myself. Based on a Swiss style grid and the new fresh GRIN branding I set to work on a wall chart that I would proudly stick up.

Because the tournament has grown so much (FYI it only started in 1991), there are now more than ever so many female players coming through to the world stage. I cannot explain enough how thrilled I am to say that my ‘players to watch’ list may be totally wrong and instead we see a fantastic display of real raw talent.

But here is my players to watch this tournament…

So make sure you tune in! You can find all the matches on TV, BBC will be showing all of England’s and Scotland’s matches on their platform plus the final.

Its now more accessible than ever to get involved and watch. Are you ready?
